Recently, SQN welcomed 16 year old Emely Catta from Frankfurt in Germany to its Henley office as part of the student’s school work experience scheme. She spent five days fully immersing herself in a variety of activities and tasks, and found a new love for English breakfast tea and Victoria sponge cake! Enjoy Emely’s diary entries from her week with SQN:
I had the opportunity to do work experience with SQN. I worked in their office based in Henley and got to learn a lot of new and very interesting things. The team was very kind and I had a great time. I got to look into a bunch of different tasks the team works on.
On my first day we had a team meeting and I got to know everyone and what their jobs at SQN are. After that, Claire let me have a look into the field of sponsorship which was very interesting. I learned about the basic principles of sponsorship and did research on a new client of SQN who they are finding sponsors for. After I did my research on the client I found possible sponsors for them. It was very fascinating to see that there are many possibilities and that this topic is so versatile. In the afternoon I read two press releases for Yale Europe Materials Handling in English and German and proof-read the German one so I could integrate my German skills into my work.
On Tuesday I did some social media monitoring and compared the social media pages of different WRC teams. In the afternoon that day we had a meeting with the Yale marketing team. It was great to see how a meeting runs and how Yale and SQN as their PR agency work together. It gave me a great insight into what a PR agency does for a company and how important their contribution is. As a present from Yale we got some toy forklift trucks and had a little brick forklift truck building competition afterwards!

The next day I did some sponsor research for another client and put my results from both of my searches into a presentation. In the lunch break the office building had a fun run and it was very cool to watch and cheer on the participants.
On Thursday I watched an online course about Instagram for business which was very interesting and helpful because it gave me a better understanding of the things SQN does with social media. Later I did some press scanning online, the purpose of which is to see if SQN’s clients are featured in any online publications. This helps SQN show their clients how much media coverage they have accumulated.
On Friday I presented my results to Claire and started to write this blog. All in all I have to say that this was a great experience and I am really glad I got to work with such a kind and experienced team. This work experience helped me to be sure about my choice of what I want to do after school and gave me a good look into sponsorships, PR work and social media. Furthermore it was very interesting to learn about what sponsorship actually is and how important and complex this topic is. I want to thank Claire and the whole team for having me and incorporating me so well into their team and work and to let me have such an amazing experience.
